CHENNAI, SEPT. 21. Two of the four young men, arrested in connection with the death of Stephanie a couple of days ago, have moved a sessions court here for bail, stating that the incident was an accident. (A magistrate's court declined to grant bail to all the four yesterday.) In their new bail application, P. Venkatesan of Chintadripet and K. Raja of Pattalam contended that they were innocent and that the entire episode had occurred ``accidentally.'' They claimed that they had been arrested based on ``exaggerated facts, and magnified and unsustainable Sections (of law).'' When the matter came up for hearing before the I Additional Sessions judge, P. Devadoss, counsel for the petitioners sought time to amend the petition by changing the respondent's name, given that the investigation had already been transferred from the traffic police to the law and order wing of the Mylapore police. The matter will come up for hearing tomorrow. The petitioners said they had been arrested for alleged offences under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Motor Vehicles Act and the Prevention of Indecent Behaviour with Women Act. They were remanded to judicial custody on September 19 by the IX Metropolitan Magistrate at Saidapet.
New charges
Meanwhile, the four have been charged under provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act. City police officials said under Section 4-A 2 (i) of the Act, the accused have to prove their innocence.
