Woman petitions NCW against Minister

By Our Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE, SEPT. 22. A woman panchayat member of Kodancherry grama panchayat here has petitioned the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the State Women's Commission (SWC) against the Forest Minister, K.P. Viswanathan, for allegedly using abusive language at her during his visit to Jeerakappara last week.

In a complaint sent to the NCW chairperson, Poornima Advani, and the SWC chairperson, M. Kamalam, Geethamma Rajendran alleged that Mr. Viswanathan had ill-treated her in front of forest officials and mediapersons when she tried to submit a memorandum soon after his visit to the Jeerakappara forests on September 13.

The Minister asked the CPI(M) woman ward member to clear off from the Thusharagiri Facilitation Centre where he was about to address a press conference. ``Get out of here. Who is after all a panchayat member? Member or panchayat president whoever it is when asked to get out... should get out,'' she reproduced the words used by the Minister in her petition to the women bodies.

The Minister's visit to Jeerakappara was to make an on-the-spot study on the illegal felling of trees that took place in the notified forest area in the first week of September. A week earlier, the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Acuthanandan, had also visited the forest.

Ms. Rajendran had visited the spots of illegal tree felling in the interiors of the forests during both occasions.

MP seeks apology

Meanwhile, the Kozhikode MP and Janata Dal(S) State president, M.P. Veerandrakumar, has demanded that the Forest Minister tender a public apology for using derisive language at a woman local body representative just because she tried to give him a memorandum stating the problems of the farmers in the hilly regions. Instead of throwing out the culprits who encroached the forests there, it appeared that the Minister threw out a woman elected representative who approached him with local problems, Mr. Veerandrakumar said.
