GUNTUR, SEPT. 22. Two youths, residents of Mangalagiri in Guntur district, died at 1 a.m. on Wednesday, a couple of hours after they consumed liquor purchased from a local wine shop. A lorry driver, Sayed Karimullah, 20, and his friend, Sheik Baaji, 21, purchased liquor from a shop in Mangalagiri town at 10 p.m. on Tuesday and consumed it in Baaji's house. Just before midnight Baaji fell unconscious, which prompted his relatives to check for Karimullah's health and he was also found slipping into unconscious. Both of them were rushed to a local private hospital, where they were refused treatment. The personnel at the Government hospital also advised them to take them to the NRI Hospital, where the doctors declared them brought dead at 1 a.m.
Previous cases
Five persons had died last year in the town after consuming liquor mixed with cyanide. The relatives of the two friends, however, said that they did not have suspicion on any person. None was aware of the shop from where they had purchased the liquor. The Excise and Prohibition Superintendent, Kesava Rao, inspected all the shops in the town on Wednesday. All the wine shops were closed for the day. The Government cheap liquor purchased by the victims was of the batch number released on August 31. Post-mortem was conducted on the bodies and handed over to the relatives. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Guntur Rural, Gurucharan Das, was investigating the case. The police collected samples of the liquor from the bottles and the body fluids and sent them for laboratory investigation. s "The cause of death can be ascertained only after the reports are available," the DSP said.
