Korea to meet Iran in final

By Our Sports Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 22. Korea upset holder China 72-67 to make the final of the 18th Asian Junior basketball championship for men at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor stadium here on Wednesday evening. Korea will meet Iran, who crushed Lebanon 78-37, in the final.

The signs were ominous from the start of the China-Korea clash. Neither of the traditional Continental rivals, known for their proficiency in outside shooting, could make an impression and Korea, which held its nerves at the crunch, walked away with the match. China did revel in fits and starts. In the third quarter, after changing ends at 36-38, China did seem to take the control, going up 42-38 and 55-50. But the lead did not last long as Korea came out strongly in the fourth.

Iran thrashed Lebanon 78-37, in the other semifinal.

India seventh

India put up yet another pathetic display to finish seventh in the championship. With Kazakhstan out of the competition, preferring to fly home instead of playing the placings matches, India had to beat Chinese Taipei for a decent finish. The pluck and purpose lasted for the initial quarter and then went `bust' as Chinese Taipei scored a 82-74 win.

The results: Semifinals: Korea 72 (Su In Song 22, Jae Pil Ha 20, Jin Soo kim 12, Sung Jin Park 9) bt China 67 (Wang Yong 24, Xie Libin 19, D Xiaowei 7); Iran 78 (Ali Beheran 10, Jaber Darrehsari 17, Arashk Broojeni 11) bt Lebanon 37 (Imad Saad 12, Mazen Mneimneh 8).

5 to 8 placing: Chinese Taipei 82 (Yen Chen Hung 24, Su I-Chie 13, Lin Yu Huei 11) bt India 74 (Jagdeep Singh 25, Bijobi Vakkachan 19, Talwinderjit Singh 14).

13th placing: Philippines 81 (Jervy Cruz 25, Dylan Ababou 18, Alvin ohn 12) bt Yemen 70 (Adel Bourji 20, Samer Al Asabha 11, Sabri Sadaqe 9).

15th placing: Singapore 80 (Oh Wei Jei 30, Won Wei Long 13, Tan Hong Hup 11, Guan Hua 9) bt Qatar 60 (Majid Mohd 23, Mohd Faraj 14, Mar Marzouq 8).
