THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 22. At a time when the Congress party is getting closer to the Left parties at the national level, the KPCC has lashed out at the CPI (M) and Left parties for their blind opposition to the State Government and their "political blackmail" of sorts of the UPA Government. In a political resolution passed at its executive meeting, the KPCC ridiculed the CPI (M)-led Left parties for their extra-ordinary and condemnable stand of supporting the UPA Government from inside and opposing it from outside. "This stand would only lead to loss of credibility of the UPA Government and was a political blackmail of sorts. The Left parties should seriously consider whether such a position would not be beneficial to the BJP and fundamentalist forces," the resolution said.
Anti-democratic
The resolution protested against the CPI (M) blind opposition to the State Government in whatever it did. The Opposition bid to criticise and ridicule the present UDF Government that was only days old was anti-democratic. The agitations now being sponsored by the Opposition party against the Government was totally out of place and condemnable, the resolution said. Addressing a press conference, the KPCC president, Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, justified the resolution, stating that the CPI(M) and the left parties were forced to support the UPA Government as a result of the prevailing political conditions in the country. There was no contradiction in the KPCC's stand as the CPI(M)-led LDF was its main opponent in Kerala.
Tributes to Antony
The political resolution paid rich tributes to the former Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, stating that the UDF Government under him had taken several landmark decisions, particularly in the education sector. It also complimented him in getting sanction for the Vallarpadom container terminal. It said that Mr. Antony alone could not be blamed for the UDF's defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. The problems in the Congress party and the unfounded allegations of the Opposition were the main reasons for the defeat. The KPCC expressed satisfaction at the smooth transition and the election of a new Chief Minister without any hitch. It also supported the 100-day package announced by the Oommen Chandy Government. It wanted the new Government to go ahead with its development agenda, focussing on agriculture, traditional industries and employment generation. Replying to questions, Mr. Pillai said that the Pillai-Jacob issue did not come up for discussions. However, this did not mean that the issue relating to their exclusion from the Cabinet was a closed chapter. He said that it had been decided not to appoint a new committee to study the Narendran Committee report as the existing one under the senior leader, Aryadan Mohammed, had completed a major portion of the work. He said that the executive had also decided that the Congress Ministers would hold monthly sessions at the KPCC headquarters in an attempt to address issues raised by the DCCs.
