BANGALORE, SEPT. 22. Residents of the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) Phase 5 flats in Yelahanka are protesting against the construction of a school in their colony. Over 500 residents from a cluster of 3,500 flats took out a procession to the KHB office on Wednesday to submit a memorandum against the construction of the school. They said the proposed school for the visually disabled, in the midst of a cluster of flats, would block ventilation in their apartments and disturb peace.
Invasion of privacy
"If the school comes up, people from that building can look into our bedrooms," says S. Ramesh, a resident who has been living in the colony for the last five years. The residents are worried that the presence of the school would increase traffic in the area. But their biggest grouse is that they were not informed by the KHB about plans to construct a school in the area till a week ago, when the plot was prepared for the construction. Baira Reddy says: "Our original sale deed does not say anything about a school. It shows the area as a vacant plot." N. Shantesh, another resident, says there are reports that the area was going to be converted into a park. "We need a park. There is no place for our children to play." A KHB official, who did not want to be named, said the master plan for the area developed by the Bangalore Development Authority included a school. However, the plot was allotted for the school till recently and the residents would not have known this, he said.
Lack of amenities
Residents complained of lack of basic amenities. The sewage pipes in the low-income group flats were broken and the wastewater could mix with the drinking water supply, says Sreenivas Rao. Roads in the locality have been dug up, leaving the sewage collection tanks open.
