dated September 24, 1954: Chou warns U.S.

The Chinese Prime Minister, Mr. Chou En-lai has declared that the liberation of Formosa was a completely internal affair of China and could in no way be sabotaged by America. Addressing the National People's Congress of China in Peking on September 23, he said continued U. S. "occupation" of Formosa was completely intolerable and its "enslavement" would not be allowed. "Formosa must be liberated," he asserted and described as "absolutely unacceptable to the Chinese people" any attempt to place Formosa under U.N. trusteeship or any other pattern of trusteeship. Mr. Chou accused the U.S. of collusion with Dr. Syngman Rhee, the South Korean President, and Chiang Kai-shek to organise another military alliance in line with SEATO. He said that China wanted the American fleet, now in the Formosan Strait, to be evicted by force. What Asia wanted was peace and not war, but the U.S. was persistently attempting to enlarge the scope of war, he added.
