PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 23 . The Social Welfare Minister, M. Chandirakasu, today said that free saris and dhotis would be distributed to families listed as below the poverty line (BPL) as well as Scheduled Caste families before Deepavali. Speaking after inaugurating the web site of the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department at his chamber, Mr Chandirakasu said that as announced by the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, two sets of clothes would be given to BPL families before the festival. He said the department would soon distribute free cycles to 12,000 government school students of all castes, who are studying in standard IX. On the issue of reservation in government jobs for Most Backward Classes, he said talks were underway with the Central Government. Asked about the delimitation of constituencies, he said the deletion of certain constituencies and merging them with others presented a very confusing picture to the voters and felt that the existing constituencies could be continued as such. The Welfare Secretary Jaiprakash and Adi Dravidar Welfare Department Director Chandrasekar were also present. The web site, www.pondicherryadwelf.org, has been set up at a cost of 1,31,500, will contain details of various schemes.
