ISLAMABAD, SEPT. 23. Pakistan has appointed the former Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Jehangir Karamat, as its new Ambassador to the United States. He replaces Ashraf Jehangir Qazi who has taken over as the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Iraq. Gen. Karamat is in New York now in connection with the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf's visit. Gen. Karamat retired as Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Chief of the Army Staff in October 1998. After his retirement Gen. Karamat has been a visiting fellow at CISAC Stanford University, U.S. and the Brookings Institution, Washington DC. He was part of a U.N. sponsored study on Afghanistan and is Chairman, Board of Governors of the Islamabad Policy Research Institute.
