Call for foolproof youth policy

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, SEPT. 23. Speakers at a workshop held on the draft youth policy of the State Government here on Thursday underlined the need for taking into account the failure of similar schemes launched earlier.

The Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojna (PMRY) and Chief Minister's Empowerment of Youth (CMEY) came into picture at the workshop for their vulnerability to misuse, despite being helpful to the unemployed to lead a decent life. The officials also subscribed to the view that the lacunae that had crept into these schemes should be done away with to make the draft policy foolproof.

Initiating the discussion at the workshop conducted by SETVEN, the Collector, S.S. Rawat, likened `yuvashakti' to water in a reservoir that had to be properly channelised and put to use to derive maximum benefit.

Banks' role

Admitting that the PMRY and the CMEY were on the brink of collapse, the DRDA Project Director, P. Arun Kumar, hoped that the proposed `Rajiv Yuvashakti' would be an improved version. Faulting bankers for hesitating to fund even deserving PMRY cases, he also blamed the youth for creating a fear among banks by not settling dues.

While the women's groups benefited by gaining bankers' confidence, the men failed on this count. It was this `attitudinal difference' that he sought to be reckoned while drafting the policy.

V-C's call

P. Murali, Vice-Chancellor of the S.V. University, blamed the youths' mindset in showing reluctance to try out new ventures and instead waiting endlessly for Government jobs.

A management professor himself, Mr. Murali spoke on the fall in entrepreneurial qualities in the youth bringing to light instances of post graduates, including MBAs, approaching him for an attender post in the university.

The SETVEN Chief Executive Officer and District Youth Welfare Officer, E. Pratap, coordinated.

Lok Sabha members and MLAs of the district were conspicuous by their absence at the meet.
