CHENNAI, SEPT. 23. `Villupattu' artiste Subbu Arumugam will receive the Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Birthday Commemoration Award of Rs. 1 lakh instituted by the Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust on the latter's 124th birth anniversary celebrations here on September 30. Ar. Ramaswamy, trust secretary, told the media that a panel of three judges including P.R. Gokulakrishnan, former Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, Tirupambaram Shanmugasundaram, former principal, Government Music College, and A. Natarajan, former director of Doordarshan, selected Mr. Arumugam for the award. On the birthday of Rani Lady Meyyammai Achi, the trust will award Rs. 1 lakh to the lady who has done outstanding service in social work. The trust will also help persons who are hospitalised for medical treatment and heart ailment. Mr. Arumugam began his career in Villupattu with his `Mahatma Gandhi Charitham,' for N.S. Krishnan and has scripted several Villupattu programmes. His novel titled, `Manithanai Kaanom,' was filmed as `Chinnanchiru Ulagam.' His Villupattu programmes on Ramayanam, Mahabharatham, Silappathikaram and other topics have been performed for over three decades in Tamil Nadu and abroad. K. Chidambaram, trust treasurer, was present at the press meet.
