THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 23. Many consumers who have been using the pre-paid cards of the BSNL (India Telephone Cards) for making local and long distance calls on the landline are being put to much difficulty as the heavy traffic on this network has made it virtually impossible for callers to get connected to the exchange. Callers using ITC have to get connected to the number 160244 before they can put their calls through. However, most of the time it is impossible to make connection with the exchange, consumers have been complaining. The ITC is one of the most popular of the services of the BSNL and in the district alone, some 70 to 80 lakh cards in various denominations are sold every month. However, the BSNL has not been able to match this increasing demand for ITC cards with a simultaneous increase in network capacity and this has been resulting in constant clogging of the system. According to BSNL officials, the network is always busy between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., when some 30,000 calls are put through, while the network has the capacity to handle only about 21,000 calls. The rest of the calls do not mature. At any given time, the network can handle only 750 calls simultaneously. On Friday nights, when most people would be making long distance calls to the Gulf, about 60,000 calls are made every hour, while the actual call attempts would be much more. The officials say that a separate exchange is being readied at the Medical College just for handling the ITC circuit. Capacity expansion is being carried out at Bangalore also, where a new IN switch with a capacity to handle 10 lakh calls simultaneously is being commissioned on October 1 and with that the problem will set itself right, they say.
