Sir, The hue and cry raised by the Left over the appointment of foreign experts on the consultative committees of the Planning Commission was uncalled for. The true mark of any intellectual is the willingness to listen to all points of view.

Sir, I refer to the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia's argument that there are centres of excellence outside the government departments that can be tapped. But no one knows better than him that not all countries that have followed the advice of the IMF, the World Bank and McKinsey have prospered economically. At the most, their advice benefits the elite. In this instance, therefore, the Left is right.
