TIRUCHI, SEPT. 24. Farmers' representatives have demanded the introduction of parallel procurement system and opening of direct paddy purchase centres (DPCs) in the district. At a farmers' grievance day meeting held here today, they pointed out harvesting of kuruvai paddy had begun in the filter point areas. The District Cauvery Delta Farmers' Welfare Association president, G. Kanagasabai, contended that the parallel procurement system was essential, as farmers were not getting remunerative prices in the open market. A 60-kg bag fetched just Rs.270 in the open market, as against the minimum support price of Rs. 336. With the onset of monsoon, prices were likely to go down further, and the farmers, who had a bad patch over the past three years, would be in distress, he claimed. The Bharathiya Kisan Sangh secretary, P. Ayyakannu, also stressed the need for immediately opening direct paddy purchase centres in the Lalgudi area. Several other representatives echoed their views. The Collector, V. Pandian, who was in the chair, said the possibility of opening DPCs would be considered in October.
Crop loans
A cross-section of the farmers demanded that all crop loans sanctioned by the cooperative banks till March 2004 be converted as medium-term loans. Mr. Kanagasabai said the cooperative societies, while sanctioning loans, were insisting that farmers go in for crop insurance, and collected the premium compulsorily. However, individual farmers did not stand to benefit from the scheme, as they would not be compensated individually in case of any crop damage. Compensation was awarded only if crops were affected in a comprehensive area. He demanded that farmers be compensated individually in case of crop damage. He also urged the district administration to take steps to immediately desilt drainage channels. Mr. Raja Chidambaram also insisted that the crop insurance scheme could succeed only if individual farmers were compensated in case of crop damage. Many representatives, including Mr.Kanagasabai and Siva Suriyan, called for steps to press Karnataka to release the Cauvery water as per the interim award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. The Tribunal, they said, should come out with its final verdict at the earliest. Puliyur Nagarajan expressed disappointment over the very few number of farm power connections sanctioned for the district this year, and called upon the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to reconsider its decision.
