TIRUVARUR, SEPT. 24. The Tiruvarur Collector, P. Ekambaram, has appealed to bankers in to disburse crop loans before October 15. He was presiding over a meeting held here recently of the district-level review committee that reviewed the banks' performance during the second quarter of 2004-2005. The Collector said this was the peak season for sanctioning crop loans: after the Cauvery water reached all parts of the district, and a good rainfall, farmers started `samba' cultivation. As framers were hit by the drought for the past two years, farmers did not have enough money for cultivation. Hence, the banks should sanction crop loan liberally. He said the banks disbursed Rs. 133.42 crores for agriculture last year. This year, the Annual Credit Plan envisaged Rs. 182.87 crores for the sector. G. Jayachandran, Senior Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, Nagapattinam, asked the bankers to prepare two or three small projects and implement them and finance 100 new farmers. K. Palanisamy, Assistant General Manager, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), said the bankers should concentrate more on crop loans. S. Ayyaru, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, V. Ramanathan, Project officer, Mahalir Thittam, and V. Selvaraj, Chairman, Tiruvarur district panchayat council, attended the meeting.
