Leaders mourn Raja Ramanna

BANGALORE, SEPT. 24. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, has mourned the death of Raja Ramanna, eminent nuclear scientist and a former Union Minister, in Mumbai.

In his condolence message, Mr. Chaturvedi said Dr. Ramanna played a key role in shaping the country's nuclear policy as well as its premier nuclear installations. He ably presented the country's policy of using nuclear power for peaceful purposes at various international forums with conviction and success.

He was not only a scientist of worldwide eminence but also a great humanist, a musicologist with wide interest in music, arts, literature, and culture.

The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, in his message said Dr. Ramanna's death was a great loss to the scientific world and to the nation.

H.D. Deve Gowda, former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) President, said the scientific world suffered a great loss in the death of Dr. Ramanna. The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, said that Dr. Ramanna was one of the greatest scientists in the country.

The Mayor of Bangalore, P.R. Ramesh, and the Deputy Mayor, G. Basavaraju, and leaders of the Opposition parties in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Council have mourned the death of Dr. Ramanna.

H.N. Ananth Kumar, BJP State unit President; B.S. Yediyurappa, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly; D.H. Shankaramurthy, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council; S.R. Bommai, former Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) President; B.K. Hariprasad, MP; Niranjanaradhya, Vice-President of the Karnataka State-level School Development and Monitoring Committee Coordination Forum; Abraham Ebenezer, Principal, Bishop Cotton Boys' School, Bangalore; Vibudesha Tirtha, Chairman, Poornaprajna Institute of Scientific Research of Admar Math Education Foundation, Bangalore; and Balachandra Rao, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Gandhi Centre have also mourned the death of Dr. Ramanna.

`Big loss to State'

In his condolence message, G. <129>Parameshwar, former Minister, said Raja <129>Ramanna headed a task force on educa-tion.

He said the Government had implemented almost every recommendation made by Dr. Ramanna to improve the standards in primary and secondary education, especially in rural areas.

"In a few years from now, the scenario of primary and secondary education in the State will witness major changes following the implementation of Raja Ramanna's recommendations. Raja Ramanna's death is a big loss to Karnataka," he said.
