Formation flying for Dasara

Mysore Sept. 24. Formation flying by fighter aircraft will be the main attraction during the Dasara air show to be held at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium. The Indian Air Force (IAF) will present a spectacular display of skydiving featuring Akash Ganga or the Air Devil group and two transport aircraft and a medium-sized plane will also be part of the air show. Air Commodore Sankar Mani visited Mysore today and inspected the venue of the air show and held discussions with the Deputy Commissioner, Kumar G. Naik, the Mysore City Corporation Commissioner, A.B. Ibrahim, and the Superintendent of Police, Vipul Kumar. Apart from the Dorniers and AN 32s, microlight aircraft will also be featured during the air show while efforts will be made to display para dropping under simulated war conditions all of which will take 30 minutes.

Kalam to look into Bench issue

GULBARGA SEPT. 24. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has promised a delegation of lawyers from Gulbarga, Raichur and Bidar districts that he will look into their demand for a permanent Bench of the Karnataka High Court in the Hyderabad Karnataka region. The President was here on Thursday to inaugurate the centenary celebrations of Sharanabasaveshwar Vidya Vardak Sangh, the silver jubilee celebrations of Gulbarga University and a seminar on "Vision 2020 - resurgent rural India''. He accepted a memorandum from the presidents of the Gulbarga District Bar Association, M.N. Patil, the Raichur District Bar Association, Shankargouda, and the Bidar District Bar Association, Kashinath Rao Phule. Mr. Patil said the President told the delegation that he was aware of the issue. When Mr. Patil pointed out that the President can suo motu sanction a High Court Bench as per Section 51 of the States' Reorganisation Act taking into consideration the problems faced by the people of the region which merged with the new States, Dr. Kalam said that after his return to New Delhi he would go through the memorandum and look into the constitutional provisions before taking a decision.

Housewife duped

TUMKUR SEPT. 24. Two persons, who visited a house in the guise of ornament polishers, took away jewellery worth Rs. 35,000 at Tiptur in Tumkur district on Thursday. The police said Shobha and her father-in-law, Mallikarjunaiah, a retired official of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd., were at home when the accused approached them stating that they would polish ornaments. Ms. Shobha, who gave them her ornaments, became mute when the accused used some powder while at work. They took away the ornaments, which they were polishing. After some time, Ms. Shoba alerted her father-in-law about the incident.

New Dubai campus of MAHE

Udupi Sept. 24. The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has moved into a new campus at 14th Block of Knowledge Village in Dubai. A press release issued here said the Dubai branch of MAHE moved into the campus, which was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of MAHE, H.S. Ballal, on September 5. The Dubai branch started functioning in 2000.

Trimester system opposed

MYSORE Sept. 24. The Karnataka State High School Assistant Teachers' Association has urged the State Government to review its decision to introduce the trimester system for high school students from this academic year. Addressing presspersons here today, the association's general secretary and former MLC, K.C. Puttasiddashetty, said the Government should have introduced a semester system. Three examinations a year would be a burden on students and teachers. With the Government introducing the trimester system from this academic year itself, students and teachers had little time to prepare. Teachers had not been trained in the new system, he said. The association would organise a workshop for high school teachers in the city on September 28.
