`Demand for train service justifiable'

By Our Staff Reporter

VIRUDHUNAGAR, SEPT.24. The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industries has said the popular demand for running a Tirunelveli/Tuticorin-Chennai fast passenger train service is justifiable.

In a memorandum sent to the Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, its general secretary, P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian, said that whenever the demand was put forth, the reply from the Railways was "long distance passenger train service is not profitable."

The request for running a fast passenger train on an experimental basis was not heeded to, he said.

Stating that fast passenger trains were being run for longer distances in other zonal railways, Mr. Balasubramanian said, "Tamil Nadu is being neglected."

Claiming that fast passenger trains were making profit, he questioned why Tamil Nadu was being denied one, when such trains were being operated in other States. Pointing to the low fares of the fast passenger trains, Mr. Balasubramanian said that there would be higher patronage from passengers for intermediate stations, bringing in more revenue.
