KOCHI, SEPT. 24. A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court today extended by three months, the time given to the Government to complete the process of assessing the damages caused to various families of Marad in the wake of the Marad incidents and awarding compensation. The Bench comprising Justice K.A. Abdul Gafoor and Justice J.M. James extended the time when a petition filed by the Kozhikode District Collector came up. The court had earlier directed the District Collector to look into the grievances voiced in the representations filed by the petitioner, Becheevi and others, and take a decision in consultation with the Government within three months. The Collector submitted in the petition that the district administration had taken steps to redress the grievances of rehabilitated families of Marad. A special officer had been deputed for assessing the actual loss suffered by the families of Marad. Most of the petitioners were complaining about the losses of their belongings.
Airport privatisation
Justice K. Balakrishanan Nair today issued notice to the Centre and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) on a petition seeking to declare unconstitutional Section 12A of the Airport Authority of India (Amendment) Act, 2003. The petition was filed by the convener of the Joint Forum of AAI Employees' Confederation, T.K.J. Nair. As per the amendment to Section 12 of the Act, in public interest or in the interest of better management of airports, the premises of an airport, including its buildings and structures could be leased out to private agencies. As a result, steps were on to privatise Mumbai and Delhi airports. The petitioner contended that it was detrimental to national security.
Monument protection
The court directed the Director General of Archaeological Survey of India and Director, Department of State Archaeology, to file an affidavit in response to a writ petition seeking to protect the ancient monuments associated with the Mamamkom held on the banks of Nila. The petition filed by Mustapha of Kozhikode sought to declare the remnants of Mamamkom as ancient monuments under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act.
Transit pass
The court issued notice to the Mining and Geology and State Government on a writ filed by Indian Rare Earths Ltd. against the cancellation of its transit pass for transportation of beach washings.
