L-G inspects garbage segregation scheme

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 24. The Delhi Lieutenant-Governor, B.L. Joshi, today visited the group housing societies of I.P. Extension to witness the garbage segregation scheme being implemented by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in the trans-Yamuna area.

Appreciating the steps being taken by the MCD to segregate garbage, Mr. Joshi said the scheme could become successful only with the active co-operation of the area residents. The civic body with its official machinery alone cannot make such large-scale programmes a success.

The garbage segregation scheme in I.P. Extension is being implemented in association with the Federation of Group Housing Societies of this area. Mr. Joshi, who was taken around dhalaos and garbage collection points and shown the progress and implementation of the Zero Garbage Management Scheme, also released a compact disc on the scheme.

During the inspection, Mr. Joshi found that the scheme has started showing appreciable results in this part of the Capital.

"Segregation has resulted in generation of much lesser quantity of garbage. We have also set up complaint centres. A number of resident welfare associations are adding to their income by selling recyclable garbage. The dhalaos have become free of foul odour," said the Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta. The area MLA, Naseeb Singh, and the Councillor, Ramesh Pandit, accompanied Mr. Joshi during the inspection drive.

Mr. Mehta said the Federation of Group Housing Societies of I.P. Extension had shown what co-operation between the residents and MCD can achieve. He appreciated the role of the Federation in implementing the zero waste management programmes as well as its role in removing the misgivings of taxpayers and collection of property tax.

Meanwhile, Mr. Joshi has cancelled his proposed visit to Defence Colony in South Delhi on Saturday. He was scheduled to see the demolition drive of the MCD. Although, MCD sources said a new date would soon be fixed, it is understood that the visit has been cancelled in view of the controversy related to the demolition drive of the MCD as several residents have gone to court and got stay against the drive.
