Vijayawada
By Our Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA, SEPT. 24. Alleging official "indifference" in conceding its long-pending demand for converting the Payakapuram tank-bed into house sites and distributing them to the poor, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has decided to take the issue to the notice of the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, when he arrives here on a one-day visit on Saturday. The CPI (M) activists, led by the party's city committee secretary, Ch. Babu Rao, staged a dharna in front of the VGTM Urban Development Authority office on Friday. They threatened to occupy the land if the authorities failed to distribute it among the poor.
Heat no bar
Braving scorching heat many including women, some of them carrying their little children, turned out for the dharna. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Babu Rao criticised the previous Telugu Desam Government for "cheating" people, despite assurances on distributing the land. The Congress, which included distribution of house sites to poor in its election promises, should fulfil them soon, he said.
Survey sought
He said the conversion of tank-bed that was not serving either irrigation of drinking water needs should not be a problem for the authorities. He recalled that a portion of the tank-bed had already been converted and given away to private parties. The CPI(M) wanted a scientific survey to be conducted, based on which the lands could be distributed among those eligible, he said.
