Temperature

TIRUCHI, SEPT.24. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 32.4 degree Celsius and a minimum of 25.7 degree Celsius.

Jail term in dowry case

A milk vendor, Vadivel Kumar (34) of Ayyampalayam near Thuraiyur, was sentenced to seven-year imprisonment by the Mahila Court Judge, V. Thayarammal, on Thursday.

He was charged with driving his wife, Shanthi (25) of Kurumbapatti, whom he married in 2000, to commit suicide on April 24, 2003. He had allegedly demanded 10 sovereigns jewels and Rs.15,000.

Youth held

The All Women Police have arrested Sudhakar (25) of Arjunan Colony, Bikchandarkovil, based on a complaint registered by his wife, Gandhimathi (23) of Keelakurichi near Tiruverumbur. Their marriage took place in 2002.

She stated that Sudhakar had tortured her demanding dowry of Rs. 50,000 cash, a two-wheeler and five sovereigns jewels along with his parents Radha and Seetha, sisters Ambika and Latha, and brother Thangavel.

Computers found missing

Five computers were found missing from a Computer Centre at Indira Nagar on Wednesday.

According to the complainant, Sankar (27), the intruders had broken open the door. The Navelpattu police have registered a case.

Demonstration

Members of the Ordnance Factory Tiruchi Employees' Union (OFTEU) on Thursday staged a demonstration demanding fulfilment of their five-point charter of demands, including pay revision.

Propaganda

The Tamil Nadu Vivasaya Thozhilalarga Sangam, affiliated to the CPI(M), on Thursday organised a van propaganda from Kappampatti to Thuraiyur in Uppiliapuram and Thuraiyur police station limits demanding basic amenities and free pattas.

Muthusamy, the district unit president of the Sangam, led them.

Theatres remain closed

All cinema houses in the city remained closed on Thursday in connection with the procession taken out by film artistes in Chennai seeking action against the menace of pirated CDs.

However, a couple of theatres operated second show, according to police sources.

Mettur level

The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 83.42 feet today. The inflow was 13,656 cusecs and the discharge 11,330 cusecs.
