NEW DELHI, SEPT. 25. The former President, K.R. Narayanan, has condoled the death of nuclear scientist, Raja Ramanna, who passed away in Mumbai on Friday. Expressing shock and grief over the demise of Ramanna, Mr. Narayanan said he was a great humanist devoted to the welfare of mankind through application of science. He has inspired thousands of our young men and women to take up science as their vocation. "I consider Dr. Ramanna as one of the makers of modern India who gave substance to our dreams and aspirations to make our nation great,'' he said. In Ramanna's death, India has lost an outstanding scientist and a man of thought and wide literary and philosophical interest and social sympathies, the former President said. The Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson, K. Rahman Khan, described Ramanna as one of the country's greatest scientists. Mr. Khan said his contribution to India's nuclear power programme will benefit the country in many ways. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson, Yashwant Sinha, said Ramanna was an eminent scientist and a distinguished public figure. "It was under his leadership that India was able to move from strength to strength in this crucial area and create a place for itself in the international field. His loss is irreparable,'' he said.
