Get statehood with special status: JD(S)

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 25. The Janata Dal (Secular) has urged the Rangasamy Government here to persuade the Centre to sanction statehood with special category status as mere statehood would affect the development of Pondicherry.

Addressing reporters here today, the party State president, E. Ganesan, said the Chief Minister should arrange for a meeting of a delegation of leaders of all political parties in Pondicherry with the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister and other Ministers in New Delhi to push the demand.

Welcomes delimitation

He said the party executive committee welcomed the proposed delimitation of Assembly constituencies as contemplated by the Delimitation Commission. The proposals provided fair opportunities for all constituencies to have almost a uniform pattern in the number of voters and size of the territorial limits.

He said the legislators of Pondicherry who were engaged as Associate Members of the Delimitation Commission should hold discussions with the delegates of all Dalit organisations on the criterion to be adopted before finalising the reserved constituencies.

The Pondicherry Administration should start a medical college. It was a surprise that when private players were at liberty to start colleges the Government was hesitating to do so. Mr. Ganesan criticised the delay in holding civic polls.
