PANAJI, SEPT. 25. One person was killed and three were injured when the Konkan Railway Corporation's Sky Bus Metro coaches hit the piers of the track this evening during a trial run at the Margao Railway Station in Goa, 40 km from here. The coaches were returning to the Sky Station after regular test sorties when the accident took place. The deceased was identified as T. Babu (33), an employee of KRCL. According to the Managing Director of KRCL, B. Rajaram, the coaches came to a sudden halt after one of the inmates pressed the emergency button. There was a drizzle due to which the computer miscalculated the distance and the coaches were approaching a steep curve at a speed of 60 km an hour. This led to panic among the occupants. The doors of the coaches were detached following the jolt due to the abrupt halt. Babu, who was standing near the door, fell down and was injured. He died later in hospital. Three others, working for Kernex Company — Ramachandra Murthy, Narasimhan and Ramakrishna — were injured. An eyewitness said the front portion of the first coach was damaged. Mr. Rajaram said the Sky Bus has so far conducted 60 to 70 sorties for test trial. The computers, which control the movement of coaches, would have stopped the coaches had the occupants not pressed the emergency button. He said he would conduct an inquiry tomorrow.
