Vivek, Punam reign supreme

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI, SEPT. 25. Power players — Vivek Shokeen and Punam Reddy — called the shots in the MSTLA-ITF Junior Circuit 2004. Brute force and reach made up for mobility in the two singles final on Saturday.

Second seed Shokeen, six foot plus with a heavy serve, kept gritty sixth seed Rohan Gide at bay and bagged the boys' title winning 7-6(5), 6-4. Punam needed just an hour to thwart second seed Sandhya Nagraj's challenge in the girls' title clash, clinching a clinical 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Pune-based Gide, who had downed two seeded players en route to the final, started on an ominous note by dropping serve in the very first game. Shokeen, training at National Tennis Academy in Gurgaon under Chandrasekharan, led 4-0 in the first set at one stage before the former caught up in game number 10.

Both boys traded breaks twice, leading to the tie-breaker where Shokeen again came back to overturn a 0-3 deficit. The second set was comparatively simpler with both finalists getting steadier, winning games on serve, except Gide in the 10th. The second seed continued his ruthless march, hitting six aces in all as against two aces and five double-faults by his rival.

Hyderabad girl Punam was more assertive in the girls final, overcoming a troubled shoulder to subdue Sandhya, champion in the doubles earlier.

The results (singles finals):

Boys: Vivek Shokeen bt Rohan Gide 7-6(5), 6-4

Girls: Punam Reddy bt Sandhya Nagraj 6-4, 6-1.
