KANCHEEPURAM, SEPT. 25. A three-day exhibition of products manufactured by women self-help groups (SHGs), along with branded consumer products, began here on Friday. The consumer fair Rural Exhibition is organised by the Voluntary Health, Education and Rural Development Society (VHERDS), a non-profit service organisation working for the uplift of poor and deprived communities in Tamil Nadu, Orissa and Gujarat. Since the vision and mission of VHERDS is to upgrade and enhance the knowledge and skill of rural women for their social and economic empowerment and income earning activities, the organisation formed more than 1000 SHGs in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. In a bid to provide a platform for the women SHGs to market their products, VHERDS decided to organise exhibitions of this kind in major towns, said an office-bearer of the organisation. Though the prime objective was to give a boost to marketing of SHG products, the organisation decided to include companies engaged in manufacturing of consumer products under established brand names in the exhibition, primarily to attract crowd. Nearly 25 per cent of total stalls have been allotted to women SHGs functioning in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. The exhibition will be open for the public from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. till September 26.
