U.S. bombs Fallujah again

FALLUJAH, SEPT. 26. The U.S. aircraft carried out another bombing raid on Fallujah overnight, destroying a suspected meeting place for followers of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and killing eight persons, the military and Iraqi doctors said.

The U.S. military said the ``precision strike'' targeted around 10 militants who were meeting at the house in the centre of the rebel-held city to plan operations.

``Multiple secondary explosions following the strike indicate the site was used by terrorists to store explosives and weapons,'' a statement from the military said.

A doctor said eight persons had been killed in the strike and 17 wounded.

He would not let a Reuters cameraman film the wounded as reporters have been allowed to do in the aftermath of previous strikes on Fallujah.

Partial vote

Residents would also not allow reporters to get near the site of the attack.

The Deputy Prime Minister reiterated his Government's commitment to hold elections in January, but conceded that voting might not be possible in all parts of the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister for National Security, Barham Saleh, told The Associated Press that authorities were adamant that resistance forces would not derail efforts to hold elections on time.

``Hypothetically, if you have a location in which the security situation is not conducive to holding elections ... then you end up with the question, `Shall we delay or hold the entire process hostage to that particular district?' '' he said during an interview late on Saturday in his Baghdad office.

``That will be a bridge that we will have to cross when we come to it.''

General arrested

American troops have arrested a senior commander of the U.S.-trained Iraqi National Guard for alleged ties to resistance forces, the military said on Sunday. — AP
