BELGAUM, SEPT. 26. The protest by weavers and other sections, led by the Karnataka Vimochana Ranga and Mahila Jagruti, has come to an end with the State Government conceding their demand to withdraw the order cancelling yellow cards in respect of about 2.5 lakh cases in the district alone. This was disclosed at a press conference addressed by the district in-charge Minister, Prakash B. Hukkeri, here on Sunday. Ramesh Kudachi, MLA, and the zilla panchayat President, S.S. Doddagouda, were present. The Government had also declared that it would issue the cards to 5,40,646 eligible families for the distribution of foodgrains through the public distribution system. Each of them would get 20 kg of rice and 5 kg of wheat at the rate of Rs. 3 a kg. Under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, there were 56,715 cardholders in the district who would get 28 kg of rice and 7 kg of wheat at the rate of Rs. 3 a kg and Rs. 2 a kg, respectively. The Government had identified 5,40,646 beneficiaries for distribution of yellow cards in the district, but released foodgrains only to 2,57,461 cardholders. This led to the protest. Mr. Hukkeri took up the matter with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah.

He said the Government had sanctioned Rs. 32 lakhs for the construction of a bridge across the Malaprabha near Nilavade village in Khanapur taluk to connect at least 13 villages with a State highway. A sum of Rs. 10 lakhs had been released to start the work.
