Service begins at home, volunteers told

PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 26. The Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, said the services of National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers should be used for constructive purposes.

Addressing volunteers on the occasion of the 35th NSS Day celebrations here on Saturday, the Minister said service should begin at home.

The Uppalam MLA, Anbalagan, suggested that the NSS volunteers be given uniforms. He lauded the services of volunteers for the cause of the society. The Education Secretary, B.V. Selvaraj, said the volunteers in Pondicherry set an example to others.

Mr. Lakshminarayanan released a newsletter of the NSS in Pondicherry for 2004. Mr. Selvaraj released a booklet on traffic awareness.

The Director of School Education, G. Theva Needhi Dhas, said NSS was moulding the volunteers into becoming better individuals. The NSS State liaison officer, E.M. Rajan, said in India there were 20 lakh volunteers. The Pondicherry NSS was sensitising its volunteers to the problems of the people.
