KANPUR, SEPT. 26. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, today lambasted the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre for ``denying adequate power supply to the State.'' Talking to newspersons here, Mr Yadav accused the Centre of step-motherly treatment to U.P. on the power issue. The State is currently facing a severe power crisis with demand much higher than the supply. He informed the State government was purchasing power worth Rs. 25 crores from the Centre everyday to meet the demand. The CM further condemned the Congress' criticism of Samajawadi Party-led U.P. government on law and order and power issues. ``The Congress does not take cognisance of BJP-led state governments in Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, but is fighting with the U.P. government, while at the same time supporting us from outside to check the communal forces,'' he observed. Mr Yadav alleged that the Congress has demanded deployment of army in the coming by-elections in U.P. slated for October 13 next. Earlier, inaugurating a convention of Samajawadi Sindhi Sabha, he said the Prime Minister had ``damaged the country's image before the world community by demanding a permanent seat in the Security Council'' during the United Nations General Assembly recently. Announcing a grant of Rs. 25 lakhs to set up a Sindhi Academy in the state, Mr Yadav said the community had played vital role in the freedom movement and was making serious efforts in all-round development of the country. -- UNI
