NEW DELHI, SEPT. 26. The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) announced this year's Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar (SSB) Prizes, the country's highest award in science, today at its Foundation Day celebrations. While 10 scientists from across the country have been selected in the six categories for which awards were announced, no award has been given in the field of Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences. In Biological Sciences, Gopal Chandra Kundu of the National Centre for Cell Sciences, Pune, and Ramesh V. Sonti of the Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, have been selected for the award. The award in Chemical Sciences has gone to Vinod K. Singh of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, and Siva Umapathy of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Subhasis Chaudhuri of IIT, Bombay, and Vivek Vinayak Ranade of the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, have bagged the award in Engineering Sciences while the award in Mathematical Sciences has gone to Arup Bose of the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, and Sujatha Ramdorai of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. Besides, Chetan Eknath Chitnis of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi, has got the award for Medical Sciences, and Madan Rao of Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, the SSB Prize for Physical Sciences.
