KOCHI, SEPT. 26. The Mata Amritanandamayi Math will present its Amritakeerthi Puraskar to poet Akkitham Achyuthan Namboodiri on Monday as part of the 51st birthday celebrations of Mata Amritanandamayi. The Amritakeerti Puraskar Committee, comprising Swami Amritaswarupananda as chairman and P. Parameswaran, Ayyappa Panicker, Kavalam Narayana Panicker and N.P. Unni as members, chose Mahakavi Akkitham for "his lifetime contributions to Vedic literature and his spreading of spirituality and his poetry", said a press release issued by the Math.
Publications
Akkitham, who is 79, was born and lives in Kumaranallur in Palakkad district. He has received many awards, including the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for his poem Balidarsanam in 1973 and Sanjayan Award for his famous poem Irupatham Nottandinte Ithihasam, written in 1952. He has published about 45 collections of poems, plays and short stories. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1,23,456, a statue of Goddess Saraswati designed by artist Namboodiri and a certificate of commendation. Previous winners include Shankar Abhyankar, Harihara Shastri, P. Parameswaran and Acharya Narendra Bhushan.
