Healthcare facilities for pilgrims

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA, SEPT 26 . The Minister for Devaswoms, K.C. Venugopal, has said the Health Department would prepare an action plan to provide healthcare facilities at Sabarimala as well as at the base camps in the district during the annual pilgrim season.

He told a press conference at Pampa today that a mobile medical unit would be launched on the Erumeli-Pampa route during the pilgrim season. All vacancies of doctors and para-medical staff at various dispensaries and hospitals in the district would be filled before the beginning of the Mandalam season, he added.

Water quality

Mr. Venugopal said the Kerala Water Authority had been directed to ensure the quality of drinking water before its distribution at Pampa, the Sannidhanam and along the trekking path.

He said the Health Department authorities would be directed to open dispensaries at Sabarimala a day prior to the beginning of the five-day monthly puja at the Ayyappa Temple. According to the Minister, the Civil Supplies Corporation would be allotted prime spots at Pampa and the Sannidhanam to set up fair price shops and hotels during the pilgrim season. Similarly, strict instructions would be given to all departments to continue the functioning of their offices at Pampa and the Sannidhanam till the temple was closed after the season, he added.

Diesel tanks

The Minister said the diesel tanks and transformer would be shifted from lower Thirumuttom to Paandithavalam before the beginning of the pilgrim season. However, he said the shifting of the Aravana unit would not be possible before the season owing to technical reasons. The Minister said work on the third phase of the Erumely-Chalakkayam Road would begin soon following Central clearance for the construction of road through the teak plantation in the forest area.
