Protest against house tax

NEW DELHI SEPT. 26. Intensifying their agitation against the Unit Area System of house tax, the trading community of the city today announced to launch "week-long" protest beginning Monday.

The traders and industrialists of the Capital have been demanding lowering of house tax rates, arguing that the new ones were too high and beyond their paying capacity.

The secretary general of the Confederation of All India Traders, Praveen Khandelwal, said the protest week would start on Monday with the burning of effigy of the Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, at Chawri Bazaar in the Walled City.

"Later in the week, we would be holding meetings, demonstrations and rallies against the Unit Area System," he said. On October 6, a trader's conference has been convened that would be attended by the Delhi Urban Development Minister, A. K. Walia, and the Delhi Mayor, A. R. Verma.

Boating facility inaugurated

NEW DELHI SEPT. 26. On the eve of World Tourism Day, the Delhi Tourism Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely, inaugurated a leisure boating activity at Sanjay Lake in East Delhi. The East Delhi MP, Sandeep Dikshit, and the chairman of the Trans-Yamuna Development Board, Narendra Nath, were also present on the occasion.

Started by Delhi Tourism, this is the first time that such a facility has been provided in the trans-Yamuna area. A number of soft adventure games were also put up on the occasion. In the evening, a ``kavi sammelan'' was organised in association with the Hindi Academy. Delhi Tourism also plans to set up a bungee tower at Sanjay Lake for which a request has been sent to the Delhi Development Authority.

The boating facility would be available to the general public from 12 noon to 7 p.m. in summers and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. during winters.

Pravasi Ratna Award presented

NEW DELHI SEPT. 26. The Pravasi Sangthan, a Delhi-based social welfare organisation, has instituted the Pravasi Ratna Samman award which would be presented to people who have excelled in the areas of education, social work, art, literature, sports and statesmanship. The awards were presented today by the Lok Sabha MP, Mohammad Tahir, at a function here in the Capital.

Removal of chapter demanded

NEW DELHI SEPT. 26. Activists of the Krantikari Manuvadi Morcha held a demonstration at Jantar Mantar here demanding removal of a chapter on the Noida girl Nisha in the Delhi Government school textbooks. The protestors were led by the Morcha's president, R.K.Bhardwaj. He said that Nisha had been projected as an even greater person than Jhansi Ki Rani which "was shameful''.
