SHIMLA, SEPT. 26. The body of Swedish trekker Margot Lydia Aulikki, retrieved after 23 years from the Kangla Jot Glacier in Lahaul-Spiti district earlier this month, was consigned to flames here today. The deadlock over the body, after post mortem was conducted last week, ended today when a four-member team of Swedish officials led by Senior Administrative Officer Julie Morgan reached here in the morning. The Swedish Officials preferred to cremate the "almost skeletal remains" of the trekker's body instead of giving her a burial. Some of the local security personnel along with the staff of Indira Gandhi Hospital were present at the time of performing the last rites at the Sanjauli cremation ground. Although the identity of Margot was verified by the doctors and forensic experts here, the Swedes were somewhat doubtful about the authentication. After the cremation they had planned to take some of the remains for further scientific verifications. That could be a reason for not giving her a burial, said a police officer.
