Panel to probe technology institute issue

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, SEPT. 26. The stalemate in the Malviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) here in the wake of a month-long agitation pressing for removal of the Director, A.K. Jain, is continuing with the institute's Board of Governors (BoG) deciding on Saturday that the allegations made against Dr. Jain would be probed by an inquiry committee.

The BoG meeting was presided over by the MNIT's Chairman, H.C. Pandey, while the nominees of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development and the State Government were absent.

Mr. Pandey announced that an inquiry committee, headed by a retired High Court judge, would look into the complaints of irregularities to help the BoG reach a conclusion.

The agitating staff laid a siege to the administrative building in protest against the decision and did not allow the Chairman and the Director to leave till late Saturday night.

Later, the two officials were taken out in a security ring formed by policemen.

Though the teachers and non-teaching, technical and subordinate staff had demanded that the BoG take up Dr. Jain's removal as the sole agenda of the meeting, the Board took some significant decisions regarding promotions under the career advancement scheme, dearness allowance and pension to the staff. The staff took exception to the meeting held despite the absence of important members.

The president of MNIT Teachers' Association, K.C. Jain, told The Hindu that the boycott of academic work would continue and the future strategy of agitation would be devised shortly.

He said the decision to appoint the committee was an "eyewash'' as a similar committee formed by the HRD Ministry recently had failed to pinpoint irregularities.

The employees' Joint Coordination Committee has released a "chargesheet'' against the Director, accusing him of violating all norms, being dictatorial in his functioning and indulging in financial irregularities.
