Ban orders to tackle march

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, SEPT. 26. The district administration today clamped prohibitory orders in Kaladera village, about 40 km from here, ahead of a long march from Jaipur, demanding closure of the bottling plant of the multinational soft drinks giant Coca-Cola, scheduled to reach the village on Tuesday morning.

The social activists and civil rights groups, which began the march here on Friday, had announced that they would stage a massive demonstration in front of the Coca-Cola unit on their arrival in Kaladera. They accused the soft drinks manufacturer of indiscriminately exploiting ground water reserves leading to a sharp decline in the water table in the region.

The prohibitory orders issued under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code, which are likely to remain in force till Tuesday, have disallowed the assembly of five or more persons at any spot in Kaladera and prohibited the carrying of arms and weapons by any person.

Eminent Sarvodaya leader, Siddharaj Dhaddha, who has been in the forefront of the movement against the Coca-Cola factory, and the former Union Minister, Daulatram Saran, condemned the administration's decision and termed it "an unwarranted action taken without any provocation''.

Mr. Dhaddha said while the march was absolutely peaceful, the State Government was "over-reacting'' to it, which was not a good sign. "The district administration should have considered the merits of the issue before resorting to this action,'' the nonagenarian leader added.

Prominent among those who flagged off the long march here on Friday were Mr. Dhaddha, Mr. Saran, the Lok Sabha member and Editor of "Mathrubhumi'', Veerendra Kumar, and the former MP, Surendra Mohan.
