K.K Nagar residents fume over dug up road

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, SEPT. 26. For almost two years motorists on Anna Main Road, an arterial road connecting Ashok Pillar and Nesapakkam, have been using only one side of the road, thanks to the digging on the other.

Nearly two kilometres of the road section has been closed to facilitate the laying of pipelines as part of the Chennai City River Conservation Project. This has led to chaos during peak hour traffic.

Road-users, especially schoolchildren on bicycles, have had to compete with heavy vehicles to negotiate the stretch putting themselves at risk.

Traffic at the intersection, particularly on Kamarajar Salai, is worse as motorists focus on the vehicles ahead, ignoring those coming from other roads. Traffic comes to a standstill when two buses try to make a turn simultaneously.

With the work still in progress on several stretches, the road remains unpaved and heaps of mud left uncleared, making it difficult for pedestrians to walk.

The only stretch blacktopped is the one outside the Employees' State Insurance Corporation Hospital. Another stretch at M.G.R Nagar is being readied.

To avoid traffic snarls, residents of K.K.Nagar and M.G.R. Nagar have been taking a one-km detour via Lakshmanaswamy Road and P.T.Rajan Road to reach Ashok Pillar.

Motorists also complain of frequent accidents on the road. K. Selvam, an auto driver, recalled an accident he witnessed recently which involved an elderly pedestrian and a two-wheeler near K.K. Nagar. The pedestrian sustained a fracture in the leg.

Adding to the problem of congestion is the encroachments that have come up on the closed stretch, he said.

Responding to the complaints, a Metrowater official said action had been taken to expedite road-laying. The project would be completed soon, he said.
