BANGALORE, SEPT. 26. Three children and a woman were drowned in a check dam at Dhargajogehalli on Kodigehalli Road in Doddaballapur in Bangalore Rural district, about 20 km from here on Sunday. The names of the victims were given as Nagarathnamma (35), her son Ravikumar (10), and two other teenagers, Nagarathna (16) and Savithri (12), all residents of Doddaballapur. The accident occurred when Ravikumar, a hearing impaired person, fell into the dam. He had come with his mother to wash clothes. Nagarathna and Savithri jumped into the water to rescue Ravikumar, but they also drowned. On hearing their cry for help, Ravikumar's mother, Nagarathnamma tried to pull him out to safety but in vain. She too fell and drowned, the police said. Another woman, Sharada, who joined in the rescue effort, was caught in the water. She threw her sari into the check dam and was trying to pull the victims to the shore. In the process, she lost her balance and slipped. However, she was rescued. All the victims were natives of Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh. They were employed in Doddaballapur as labourers. The bodies were fished out by the police and sent for post-mortem at a local government hospital. The Doddaballapur Rural police registered a case. The 100 ft. X 150 ft. check dam had water for 12 ft., thanks to rains.
