Ceiling on

free power

Sir,— The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, promised free power for farmers in good faith. But no sooner did he assume the reigns, the number of borewells and pumps has swelled in lakhs, may or may not be at the instigation of the main Opposition party which could not digest its miserable failure in the elections.

News reports say that rich landlords and even corporate houses around Hyderabad and in coastal areas like Samalkot are using free power. This situation surely poses problems to the Government and the Transco. To surmount this, it is necessary to fix a ceiling on the consumption and the size of the agricultural holding for entitlement of the concession.

Pat for police

Sir,— The city traffic police deserve a pat on their back for efficiently handing the huge vehicular traffic through the narrow arterial roads of Visakhapatnam.

However, I draw their attention to the drivers of vehicles who never dip their headlamps at night, often causing total blindness to those coming in the opposite lane. Punitive action against such offenders alone may set matters right.

Gaps in road dividers

Sir,— Of late, it has become a practice for the two-wheeler drivers to sneak through the gaps of road dividers. A glaring example is the breaking of the road dividers opposite the new hypermarket near L.B. College.

This practice may result in fatal accidents. I request the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (VMC) to conduct a survey of the breaks in road barriers, and the police may also pull up the erring drivers to ensure safety.

Slow progress

Sir,— The Godavari drinking water pipeline work from Gopalapatnam to Kancharapalem on the highway is done by multinational companies. But the work though taken up using hi-tech machinery, is unreasonably slow.

There are some trenches left open near the Gopalapatnam road which are posing danger to the traffic and are also causing traffic problems.

The authorities concened should complete the work at the earliest.

Bank clarifies

Sir,— Apropos the letter of D.L. Laxmana Rao in these columns on September 20: The introduction of MICR technology in bankers' clearing house in Visakhapatnam has ensured that the cheques are cleared within a day. However, the clearing house is closed on Sundays, hence the decision to change the weekly holiday so that the clearing of cheques can proceed without interruption from Monday to Saturday. This was done to be in sync with the rest of the industry. In any case, the branches where the weekly holiday is changed to Sunday from midweek are all having the facility of ATM round-the-clock. Since our ATMs are interlinked with the entire State Bank group all over the country, and the customer can access his account any time, anywhere in the country, the necessity of Sunday open branches has been obviated.
