`Cooperative sector is on the verge of collapse'

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, SEPT. 27. The Tirthahalli MLA, Araga Jnanendra, said on Monday that the cooperative sector was on the verge of collapse on account of rampant corruption.

Inaugurating an office building of the Malenadu Credit Cooperative Society here, he said the sector, which came into being after a sustained movement, had become a centre of corruption.

He said corruption in the sector was rampant because of the indifference of the people and the negligence of the Cooperation Department.

Plight of farmers

He said the plight of farmers would worsen if steps were not taken to prevent corruption in the sector.

It was unfortunate that the Government did not bother to streamline the department, he added.

Mr. Jnanendra hailed the Malenadu Cooperative Credit Society for its good service. He hoped that the Souharda Cooperative Act would help revive the sector.

The president of the society, K.N. Ramakrishna, presided over the function. The Registrar of Cooperative Societies, K.H. Gopalakrishne Gowda; the president of the Shimoga District Central Cooperative Bank, R.M. Manjunath Gowda; and the former Chairman of the Shimoga Urban Development Authority, V. Raju, were present.

J.L. Padmanabha welcomed the gathering.
