NEW DELHI, SEPT. 27. The Congress today accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of resorting to its well-known campaign of "creating social tension'' ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections by distributing literature that sought to distinguish between the majority community and others. The party alleged that the BJP and its affiliates were distributing pamphlets to make a "clear distinction between Hindus and non-Hindus claiming to be sole representative of the majority community. It is reprehensible,'' the party spokesman, Anand Sharma, said. He said the party's State unit had drawn the attention of the State Election Commission and the AICC would also approach the Central Election Commission seeking intervention. Mr. Sharma said the BJP was incapable of contesting on substantive issues or on political debate. "Politics of division has no place in a civilised society. This campaign is unacceptable in a liberal democracy''.
