NEDUMBASSERY, SEPT. 27. China seems to have succeeded in attracting Indian students for its medical education, as the first batch of 122 Malayali students left here by a chartered flight to Chennai. The students, from almost all districts in the State, will undergo medical studies in Three Gorges University in the Hubei province in Yichang. Asian Education Consultancy, an Alappuzha-based organisation, has arranged for their studies by having a tie-up with the Chinese university. From Chennai, they would travel to Yichang, via Malaysia and Shanghai. They were accompanied by Niyaz Mohammed and Riyaz Mohammed, directors of the Consultancy. The students were selected based on the marks they secured in the Plus Two examinations. Those with more than 50 per cent marks and who got the approval of the Medial Council of India were allowed to pursue their studies in the Chinese university. The students who wish to visit home could do so once in a year on the completion of every two semesters. Each student will have to pay Rs.8 lakhs, which includes all expenses, including accommodation and food. The amount has to be paid in parts on a yearly basis. Apart from this, they had to pay Rs.43,000 as airfare. For many coming from a humble background, this was indeed big money. However, their parents, who came here to see off their children, said they were ready to pay the money if quality education was assured. Medical studies in Kerala will cost much more. So it is better to send the children abroad, they said.
