LUCKNOW, SEPT. 27. The Congress will field slain bandit queen Phoolan Devi's husband Ummed Singh for byelections to Akbarpur (reserved) Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president, Jagdambika Pal, today said AICC president Sonia Gandhi had agreed upon the name of Mr Singh, who had earlier unsuccessfully contested from Basti (Sadar) Lok Sabha seat. The Election Commission had earlier cancelled the byelections to Akbarpur seat, scheduled for October 13 following the detection of some technical flaw. Fresh dates for the bypolls were yet to be announced. The seat, falling under Ambedkarnagar district, was vacated by BSP president Mayawati after her election to the Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, over 400 grassroots leaders from the ruling Samajwadi Party and the Opposition Bahujan Samaj Party and Bharatiya Janata Party today joined the Congress. A party spokesperson claimed here that besides leaders from various political parties, several intellectuals joined the Congress in the presence of Jagdambika Pal. Amongst those who joined the party included Jaiswal Mahasabha president and SP leader Satyendra Kumar Jaiswal and Mahasabha vice-president and SP leader Murari Lal Jaiswal. The others included BSP's Mohammed Miraj and Mohammed Taj Siddiqui and BJP's Ansar Ahmed. The others are Vidyant Hindu College (Lucknow) principal Mrs Dharma Kaur, its proctor Dr Pankaj Kumar and Basti Nagar Nigam vice-president Idris. -- UNI
