JAIPUR, SEPT. 27. Representatives of various women's groups met the Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, here today to demand action against the family members of a girl, who was allegedly killed in Shahadpur village of Mahuwa tehsil in Dausa district on September 22 for the sake of "family honour''. They sought punishment of the police authorities who had not filed a report on the case till the intervention of the activists who toured the area on September 25. The activists demanded the arrest of the culprits who were allegedly instrumental in killing the 15-year-old Neelam, who had eloped with a Dalit boy from the village to Mumbai in July, on her return to the family this month. The family members had cremated the body before the day break on September 22 terming the death as the result of snake bite while the girl was out that night to ease herself. The groups asked the Chief Minister to ensure protection to the Bairwa families in the locality who were now allegedly being terrorised by the Gujjar community after the elopement and restoration of the girl. The groups, whose representatives included People's Union for Civil Liberties, National Federation of Indian Women, Vishaka, Women's Education and Resource Group, Vividha, Women's Documentation and Resource Centre and the Rajasthan University Women's Association, among others, expressed their surprise at finding Ms.Raje not properly briefed about the incident. In a statement here, the activists said that Ms.Raje's insensitivity towards issues pertaining women was obvious from her response. The same attitude on her part had stopped Ms.Raje earlier from going for an appeal in the High Court on the sati glorification case after its disposal by the Special Court here, they charged.
