BIDAR, SEPT. 27. Jeevan Singh Grover of the Kannada Nadu is the richest of the nine candidates in the Bidar Lok Sabha byelection, going by the declaration of wealth and property submitted by them. Only one of them has paid municipal taxes and, in six out of nine cases, the candidate's wife is richer than him. The net worth of assets owned by Mr. Grover and his family members is Rs. 36.76 lakhs. Narasingrao Suryavanshi of the Congress is next in the list with a net worth of assets of Rs. 34.93 lacks. Babu Honna Nayak of the Janata Dal (Secular) is in the third place with assets worth Rs. 23.53 lakhs. Basavaraj Arya, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate and son of former MP, the late Ramachandra Veerappa, is the least wealthy of the candidates and has assets valued at Rs. 90,000, according to the declaration.
Two IT assessees
Of the nine candidates, Mr. Grover and Mr. Suryavanshi are income tax assessees. Except for Mr. Suryavanshi, no one has paid any other tax such as commercial tax, property tax or municipal tax for the year ending April 2004. The lives of Mr. Grover and his wife, Neha, are insured for Rs. 6 lakhs each. He has Rs. 2.1 lakhs in cash and she has Rs. 1.5 lakhs. Mr. Grover owns 60 gm of gold valued at Rs. 36,000 and his wife has 300 gm of gold worth Rs. 1.8 lakhs. He owns a Maruti Zen and his wife owns a house on 2,200 sq. ft of land in Nandi Colony in Bidar, which is worth Rs. 15 lakhs. Mr. Grover, who is an arts graduate from Kanpur University, has no case registered against him. Mr. Suryavanshi has Rs. 35,000 in cash and his wife, Sushila, has Rs. 5,000. He has Rs. 3,72,384 in his bank account and she has Rs. 2,05,035 in her account. Ms. Sushila owns an Ambassador car. The couple owns agricultural land worth Rs. 11.28 lakhs. They also own three houses valued at a total of Rs. 13.92 lakhs. Mr. Suryavanshi has challenged before the consumer forum a phone bill of Rs. 73,519 issued to him by Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.
Rent not paid
Mr. Suryavanshi, who is a graduate, owes an unspecified amount as dues to the Government towards the rent of his official quarters in New Delhi, which he used as MP from 1980 to 1991. Mr. Nayak has Rs. 5 lakhs in cash and his life is insured for Rs 1.3 lakhs. His wife, Shantabai, has life insurance worth Rs. 25,000. Mr. Nayak, his daughter, Premilabai, and son, Santosh, have 100 gm of god each valued at a total of Rs. 1.8 lakhs. Ms. Shantabai has 300 gm of gold. Mr. Nayak owns agricultural land at Maisalaga village valued at Rs. 30,000 while his wife owns land valued at Rs. 1.2 lakhs at Hamunagar. His house in Basavakalyan and that of Ms. Pramilabai in Hamunagar are worth Rs. 10 lakhs each. He earns Rs. 7,000 as rent from one of his houses. Mr. Nayak, who has completed his Teacher's Certificate Higher course, has taken a vehicle loan of Rs. 3 lakhs from Sundaram Finance in Basavakalyan. Mr. Arya has Rs. 25,000 in cash. He also owns a two-wheeler, LML Freedom. His wife, Premalata, owns 50 gold chains worth Rs. 30,000. Neither he nor his family owns land or a house. Mr. Arya, who discontinued the B.Sc. (Agriculture) course, has taken a loan of Rs. 25,000 from the Krishna Grameena Bank.
