BANGALORE, SEPT. 27. Traffic came to a standstill for close to four hours on three of the major roads in the southern and eastern parts of the city on Monday. Farmers under the banner of Raitha Jagruthi Horata Samithi, mostly from Bellandur in Bangalore East taluk, blocked Hosur Road, Outer Ring Road and Sarjapur Road from 8 a.m. till noon, when these roads have the heaviest traffic. Vehicles piled up for several kilometres at most junctions till the agitating farmers were removed by the police a little before noon. They were released later. The farmers said they were protesting land grabbing in the name of promoting the information technology industry. They claimed that the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board and the Bangalore Development Authority were buying tracts of land from small farmers at low prices and selling them to Information Technology firms at a higher price. The farmers alleged that a "land mafia" was at work, buying land in the name of non-existent IT firms with a view of reselling them at a big profit later.
