Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 27. Only about 6.5 per cent of the 1.27 lakh tribal families under the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) have reached the middle-class living level after three decades of functioning of the ITDA.
Exploitation
The Dandakaranya Liberation Organisation (DLO) claimed that only 8,390 out of the 1,27,674 families in the 3,574 villages under the 244 gram panchayats in the 11 mandals of the Visakhapatnam agency area had fared well, and wondered where the hundreds of crores of money spent by the ITDA-Paderu had gone. The huge quantity of natural resources of the 11 mandals was being exploited by middlemen and the tribals were silent spectators as even their lands were being upsurped. It wanted the National Human Rights Council to intervene in the eradication of poverty among tribals. The DLO launched a protest programme on Sunday and it would continue up to October 26 to highlight the plight of tribals and to better their lot. Its convener, Killo Dharmaroy, and its central committee member, Setti Gangadhara Swamy, submitted a memorandum to the Collector on Monday demanding the Govenrment to take several steps.
