NEW DELHI, SEPT. 27. The students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) are paying a special ode to the Father of the Nation this week. To spread Mahatma Gandhi's message of peace and create awareness about his life among the student population here, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) has organised a Gandhi week. The inaugural day on Sunday saw the screening of Aparna Sen's much loved film "Mr & Mrs Iyer'' on communal harmony and Mani Ratnam's take on youth participation in politics - "Yuva''. Monday saw a special exhibition on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, with photographs, paintings and articles on his role in the freedom struggle forming a major part of the show. A campus that has kept khadi in `fashion' for decades now, Tuesday will see a special khadi exhibition that will not just showcase khadi products, but will also give students an opportunity to buy some at some reasonable prices. Going a step further to help keep the campus clean, Wednesday has been reserved as "Shramdaan Day'', with students being invited to clean some of the more popular hangout joints on the campus like Ganga dhaba. "These places desperately require some cleaning and we have invited all students to come forward and volunteer for the work,'' said an NSUI member. From social service to talks, Thursday will see a special public meeting with Bipan Chandra, Mridulla Mukherjee and B.R.Nanda speaking on various topics connected to Gandhi. While Friday will be a chance for those who missed out on the famous film "Gandhi'' to catch up with it at a special screening here, the week long programme will wrap up on Gandhi Jayanti with "prabhat pheri'' and a "satyagrah'' for global peace and harmony.
